GRACE HOGG (1777 - 1853) and her daughter, GRACE SUTHERLAND (1824 - 1861).
From a portrait painted, in Edinburgh Scotland about 1828 by David (?) Scott. the original painting hung for many years in the home of Dr. V. V. Nicholas in Midland, Michigan. It was given by Mrs, Nicholas to Mrs. James Dawson and, by her, to Sutherland Black. This painting is mentioned in Winning Pendergast's story (page7), The lovely oil painting of her and her youngest child, Grace, had been done in England in 1828 and was a treasured possession. Grace Minty Robinson has it now in Minneapolis. (Grace's older son, George was the father of Janet Sutherland, making Grace Hogg Sutherland Janet's grandmother.)
Back row is: Warren Russell and Laura Sutherland Russell (a half-sister of our Janet and her husband), Minnie Bassett (a niece of our Janet, daughter of Janet's half-sister Euphemia), Josiah Good and Mary Good (nephew of our Janet and his wife....son of Janet's half-sister Mary), George and Augusta Sutherland (half-brother of our Janet and his wife)
Front row is: Rev. Roland Cross (the son of our Janet's step-mother from a first marriage....not exactly related, but still a part of the Sutherland family), Janet Sutherland Black, Grandmother Sutherland (Mary McLean Cross), Tom and Susan Sutherland (our Janet's only full brother and his wife), and in the very front is a son of the Good's.
As far as the portrait in the background, no one knows for sure. I like to think that since they are at a reunion of the descendants of George Sutherland from all three of his marriages (he was quite a character!), that the portrait is of him.The picture of the Sutherland Family Reunion was taken around 1900.

The Black Home in Maple Ridge is the home that Andrew and Janet built when they came to the area in 1887ish. It burned in 1924, but was rebuilt by my great grandparents Douglas and Avis as an exact replica. It still stands.
